Gare de Lyon - Assemblee Generale des Actionnaires
|
From the collection of John Birks
This French Art Nouveau plaque was issued by the PLM (Paris-Lyon-Mediterrannee) railway company for the shareholders' meeting of 1901. On the observe a winged naked boy, symbolizing the French genius, is holding the hand of a woman with flowers; two other women standing to the right represent Paris and Lyon. On the reverse is the exterior of the Gare de Lyon in Paris. Built to replace the old landing stage of Lyon, the railway station was constructed during 1895-1901 by the architect Marius Toudoire. Its construction was timed for the Worlds Fair (Exposition Universelle) of 1900 in Paris.
