JAB-30 BOLEN STORECARD / LIBERTAS AMERICANA MEDAL Copper
|
25mm 16 struck
Dies cut in 1867. Bolen destroyed the Portrait die. The Libertas America die was sold to Kline, who used it to strike a number of mules. It was modeled after the 1781 Medal struck by Augustin Dupre, by order of Benjamin Franklin. It is currently in the ANS collection.
A "MS-64" sold for $4000 in the Hayden January 2016 auction, lot 688. The piece had very nice toning, but had obvious wear on Bolen's hair and ear, as well as in Liberty's hair. A PCGS MS-64 example sold for $2040 in the Nov. 2017 Stacks Sale, lot 243. A NGC-65BN brought $1800 and a NGC-65RB brought $3840 in the same sale, lots 242 and 241.
