SOM#057, Charles Rudy, The Year's at the Spring - And Day's at the Morn, 1958

Number Issued: 650 Bronze

This is a medallic depiction of the first two lines of Robert Browning’s poem, “Pippa’s Song”.

FROM THE ARTIST

The above poem by Robert Browning gave me such a feeling of completeness and satisfaction that when the opportunity of designing a medal came to me, I could think of nothing more appropriate that using the first couplet of the verse. The man with the plow is such a universal symbol over the world that it opened the way to me. The reverse side with a woman and a goose seems right too. Fowl are used the world over and feeding them in the morning first thing is always the practice. I chose a goose because that bird with such a long neck lends itself so well in achieving an interesting composition.
